Recommendations from MCC Faculty and Library Staff

Kristen Cook

Adjunct Reference Librarian Kristen Cook recommends:

"I have always had a fascination with CS Lewis; I travelled to England in college and saw the church where he attended, his grave in that small church yard next to his brother, and the pub where he gathered with Tolkien and the other Inklings.  I even named two plants after Clive and his wife, Joy.  My first book to read by CS Lewis was Surprised by Joy, but Mere Christianity is my favorite because in it he claims to be not very well spoken and humbled that they would have him deliver these radio speeches.  However, I think he wrote with intelligence and accessiblity. My favorite quote is “A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic — on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg — or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse.”

You can find a new biography of Lewis and information about the writing of Mere Christianity in the Literature section of the New Electronic Books list.

This book by Lisa Wingate was partially inspired by a famous Waco site, the Gospel Café.  The book was the first I read by Lisa, but I have gone on to read many more by her and I also recommend the The Story Keeper and The Prayer Box.  Lisa is a local author who writes about learning from your family history, preserving traditions, healing old family wounds, and finding hope through prayer.

Melody Flowers

History instructor, Melody Flowers, recommends this new ebook on Islam, saying this is very appropriate for her World History class:

Ramona McKeown

Adjunct Librarian Ramona McKeown recommends a new book of poetry from an American author, saying "It was published on my birthday!" and the biography of Kurt Vonnegut, another American classic:

Jim McKeown

English instructor, Jim McKeown, recommends the newest novel by Richard Russo, Everybody's Fool, (not owned by the MCC library).  Not familiar with Russo?  Check out one of these that we do have:
