ENGL 1301/1302 (English Composition I & II) Prof. D. Wild

Your Assignment

Before submitting your argumentative essay:

  • Make sure it is the proper length (1000-1500 words).
  • Make sure you follow the MLA Handbook when:
    • formatting your paper
    • citing your sources
  • Make sure you include in-text citations for each source, as well as listing the source in the Works Cited page.

If you're confused about citations:

Check out the "MLA Citations" box on this page or ask an MCC librarian for help by stopping by the library or by using the links in the "Get Research and Citation Help" box on this page.

Submission:

  • Submit your rough draft as an attachment to the assignment
  • Follow Dr. Wild's rules for file names when submitting it.

How to Format an MLA-style Paper

The MLA Handbook requires you to format your paper in a particular manner. The video below explains how to do so in Microsoft Word. Though this video states that you can use any font, most instructors expect you to use Times New Roman in a 12-point font.

You will need to follow these instructions closely, so click the "Watch on YouTube" link in the lower-left corner to watch this video in a larger format.

Cheating, Plagiarism, and Academic Integrity

It's easy to understand most types of cheating because we learned about them as children. It's harder to understand plagiarism though.

Take a look at McLennan Community College's Academic Integrity policy to learn how the college defines cheating and plagiarism and discover the penalties for each.

Afterward, visit Purdue OWL's Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing or its Best Practices to Avoid Plagiarism to make sure you know how to avoid accidental plagiarism. (Yes, you can accidentally commit plagiarism!)

The video below also offers some useful information on plagiarism and tips for avoiding it.
